Q. Citations - NLM
I need to use NLM citation format for my assignment. I cannot decide if my source from emedicine (http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/912633-overview) should be cited as just a website or if it's a closed or open database or a retrieval system. There are different ways of citing each. We were told to use http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK7256/ to help us. I believe it's a retrieval system because it is called a clinical reference...that is how I have cited it thus far. Any opinions to help me solidify my citation choice? A lot of the details to explain the differences seem to be almost the same to me, but then their citation formats are very different so I want to be as sure as possible
Answer
This is a tough one! I can understand why you consider it part of a retrieval system and also why it might be considered a webpage. If you have time to check with your instructor, I would do so. Otherwise, my only advice is if you do cite it as part of a retrieval system, use the rules for "Contributions to Databases" rather than "Parts of Databases" since your article has its own authors.
