Q. Where can I find sources about "outing" a gay person without their consent, versus someone "coming out" on their own?

This is for my Queer Film Class and I'm having trouble researching the topic of "outing." I've used LexisNexis and Proquest in hopes of finding recent information but the most information that seemed helpful to me were sources dated in the 1990s when this notion was first discussed.

Answer

Hello,

When you search the library’s catalog at http://www.usciences.edu/library/  for "homosexuality" as a keyword or "queer" as a title word, you will find several books.

Also type the word 'outing' into Wikipedia and you will find some useful terms. At the bottom of the page, Further Reading shows the following:

  • Gross, Larry. Contested Closets: The Politics and Ethics of Outing. University of Minnesota Press, 1993 ISBN 0-8166-2179-9
  • Johansson, Warren & Percy, William A.  Outing: Shattering the Conspiracy of Silence. Harrington Park Press, 1994.
  • Signorile, Michelango (1993) Queer In America: Sex, Media, and the Closets of Power. ISBN 0-299-19374-8.
  • Stramel, James (1996). "Gay Virtue: The Ethics of Disclosure." Dissertation, University of Southern California

I am sending you an overview of Stramel's dissertation. It seems very informative and you can get a copy through the library.
